CH 1

Important points from Chapter one:

* The word THEATRE comes from the Greek theatron, or "seeing place" - the companion term DRAMA comes from the Greek work dran, meaning "to do". Thus we can surmise that THEATRE = something seen and something done. An ACTION is witnessed.

* Three primary ways to use the word THEATRE

a) The Theatre Building - The actual space where theatre takes place. The primary concerns are a place to perform and a place to watch. There are 4 different staging configurations (we will cover this in depth is Ch 5)

b) The Company of Players / Troupe/ Ensemble/ etc - Theatre is a collaborative art involving often hundreds of people working together to create a whole product. These people are often refereed to collectively as the troupe or ensemble. They are the people who do the...

c) ...WORK - The occupation of Theatre. When one asks a layman to define the primary occupation of the Theatre world, they tend to name the actors first and foremost. However, the work of the theatre involves much more than the folks onstage. The number of crafts involved includes:

- Producing

- Directing

- Designing

-Building

- Crews

-Stage management

- House Management

- Publicity / marketing

- Playwrighting

* Impersonation- Theatre involves actors impersonating characters. This is a unique feature to the art form. It is the one element that sets Theatre apart from other art forms.

* Performance- A performance is defined as "an action or series of actions taken for the benefit of an audience". Live performance is the ultimate endgame in the theatrical process.

* Suspension of disbelief- Where the audience agrees to tune out the outside world and enter the world of the play.

* Fourth wall- the invisible barrier that exists between and separates the actors from the audience.

We make use of two different types of performance.

a) Presentational (Direct) - Performers acknowledge the presence of the audience.

EXAMPLES- Stand up comedy- Shakespearean "asides" (where, in mid-conversation, one character would break the fourth wall and speak directly to the audience) - Greek tragedy was (and often still is) performed in a presentational style that was aimed directly at the audience.

b) Representational ( Indirect)- The actors behave as though no audience is present. In effect, the audience becomes a voyeur, looking trough the invisible fourth wall to watch someones life as it unfolds.

* Live performance/ immediacy- Possibly the main element that makes live theatre unique (as opposed to film and television) is that it is LIVE. It's happening now- there are no stops/ starts, no do-overs. Thus, anything can happen.(sometimes bad things, such as actors losing lines or missing entrances- sometimes glorious things, such as an audience being moved in unison in a strong emotional way.)

This leads to a quality of immediacy. Although most of the changes that occur from production to production are minuscule, there ARE differences. Thus, Theatre is a TRANSITORY art form- it happens once, and then it is never quite the same again. One of the primary elements that leads to this unique feature is the audience. In Theatre, unlike film, the audience is an ACTIVE PARTICIPANT. It is incumbent on the audience to listen, pay attention and respond in ways that film and TV 9though fine mediums in and of themselves) DON'T demand of us.

Discussion-

Your book discusses ART and how Theatre is an art form.
Here's your discussion topic-

a)What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word ART?

b) What makes something ART or artistic?

c) Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or why not?

a)What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word ART?

The first thing I think of when I think of the word ART is Museums.

b) What makes something ART or artistic?

I think ART is anything that is precious to the individual.
For example, I still have the very first piece of “art” my son made me over 22 years ago. It is composed of 4 orange scribbles of crayon on a piece of paper. Art is most definitely in the eyes of the beholder, it’s a glimpse of what is in someone’s mind whether it’s on stage, the big screen, a painting or in song.

c) Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or why not?

Yes, I believe Americans living in the 21st century value Art in our society. Music is a form of Art, I cannot think of 1 person in my circle of friends and family that is not passionate about music whether it be Christian, Country, 80’s, current or anything that is on the radio. Music plays a role and has an influence on society today.

c) Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or why not?
Yes, I think so. Even people who don't know the names and/or works of revered artists have an appreciation for art.

When i hear the word ART the first thing that comes to mind is dance such as ballet, jazz and modern using their bodies to represent a form of art.

b) What makes something ART or artistic?
Art is something that represents something to a individual if its a painting or if its a specific dance that brings emotions into a person.

c) Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or why not?
I believe that over time we have learn to appreciate art a lot more than we did in the past. We have learned to express ourselves in in the form of art.

a)What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word ART?
The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of the word ART is freedom, freedom to express your mood, freedom to express who you are as a person and freedom to be you. Art is something that can tie people in, it gives us something to relate to while we live in a fast pace world that doesn't stop to enjoy life.

b) What makes something ART or artistic?
I feel to make something art or to have artistic value it must speak to you, give you something to relate to about it...is it happy, sad, warm, or cold, does it make you feel something when you look at it or as the artist what do you feel about it. Art to be is a self reflection its a second world kinda like the door to Narnia, a place where you can leave all the judgement, work and daily issues and just enjoy a piece of life in its purest from something rich that makes you think. Not all forms of art are happy or sad but some are absurd or bazaar to break you out of your comfort zone. To me something that is Art of artistic is something that breaks you from your daily routine.

c) Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or why not?
Sure I feel the value of art is still standing strong in the American culture because we have art in our lives without even realizing it. When you go to class and you see a design on your text book or you go out on the town to see a movie with friends...that is all ART! Even the blandest of people have some form of art in their lives. Living in a fast pace technology world has changed the way we view art but I feel the arts are just as strong and an appreciated today as they were back in the older times.

a) What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word ART?

-The first thing that comes to mind is Museums of portraits, sculptures, and statues.

b) What makes something ART or artistic?

-I think that as long as something has color, dimension, and it tells a way of someones feelings. It also shows emotion to a piece of art.

c) Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE art in our society? Why or why not?

-I believe that some Americans today still do and that there is more people out there than what I think that "care" about art. I do not think that as of todays times that people don't "care" enough of art because we have media and technology taking over todays youth. Therefore you get people with a less interest in todays art and the history of it.

a) What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word ART?
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of the word ART is several famous paintings such as the Mona Lisa, the scream picture, and paintings done by Piccaso. I also think of ART as performing. I feel like Musicals and Plays are ART just as much as paintings.

b) What makes something ART or artistic?
I feel like anything with meaning that is filled with emotion in a nonverbal way can make it ART or artistic. I think a Musical or play could be considered ART or artistic if it portrays a story or message with emotion through not only the verbal aspect but through the movements. Something should be portraying a message or story and able to connect with the audience through feelings and emotions.

c) Do we as Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or Why not?
I think we as Americans do in fact still value art in society today. Art is everywhere we go such as, the buildings we work in is art, the landscaping at businesses, and even the American flag is art. I think some Americans value art more than others but art is everywhere even when we don't realize it.

a)What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word ART?

I think of galleries of paintings and oil pastels.

b) What makes something ART or artistic?

To me, I feel like art is subjective. If you call something art ,then it is art, even if it be a picture made of pasta noodles. I say this because there are many kinds of art out there. Who is to say what art IS and what art isn't?

c) Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or why not?

No, I believe Americans living in the 21st century do not value Art in our society. Whenever budgets are cut in schools or in some colleges, the art field is the first to be cut.
Think about it. People are not taking it as seriously as they SHOULD be.
(I do however....but that is besides the point)

1)What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word ART?
The very first thing would have to be paintings. I thik of several famous and some not so famous portaits and paintings. I also know that art is more than paintings though.

2. What makes something ART or artistic?
I think art is anything that expresses or shows emotions and maybe even a story. Art can be something from a silly play to a painting of a woman crying. It leaves room for intpretation. Artistic, I think is used to describe a aspect of someone.

Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or why not?
Yes. I think art is valued but it has adapted to modern ways. For instance, a level of art photography for a Facebook page, or music. But I on the fence wondering if plays are losing against other forms of art.

We do value art in todays world, just not in the same way as it was once valued. Times have changed and our values have changed. Music is very popular in todays world and its a way for many people to express themselves.

c) Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or why not

I believe we do value art in our society. Some people may not value plays or paintings, but Americans, for the most part, enjoy some type of music. I can't think of a single person that doesn't listen to some kind of music.

B) What makes something Art or artistic?

- When someone uses their imagination to create an outlet for their emotions.

C) Do we Americans living in the 21st century value art in our society? Why or Why not?

- I would say yes because no matter if its music, dancing, theater, etc. People use all those different forms of art to connect with one another and find some relation in each piece. Without Art, we wouldn't have buildings or clothes, so art is a necessity in everyday life.

a)What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word ART?
When I think of the word art, I think strictly of paintings, drawings, and sculptures. I also think of expression because art is a form of expression.

b)What makes something ART or artistic?
I believe that something becomes artistic when it expresses someone's feelings or emotions. To be artistic, the art must have or reveal creativity.

c)Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or why not?
There are definitely those who appreciate art, but then there are those who don't, just like there are those who appreciate sports, and those who don't, or people who appreciate music, and those who don't. It's a matter of opinion or interest. A person can't make themselves appreciate something that they don't find interesting, so that would explain why there are those who appreciate and value art, and then those who don't.

a)What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word ART?

The first thing I think of when I think of the word art, is emotion. The whole reason art exists is to relay our emotions through things such as music, painting, filming, etc.

b) What makes something ART or artistic?

Anything that is created through heart and hard work is art in my opinion.

c) Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or why not?

I think that art is valued right now maybe more than ever before. look at what role music and film plays in the daily lives of everyone around. What is the first thing we do when we get in the car? Turn on the radio. Where is the first place we go on Friday night? The movies. What is the main event of every festival? The concert. Our lives are filled with art.

a)What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word ART?

When I think of Art, I think of Chopin's "Raindrops.

b) What makes something ART or artistic?

I believe what defines Art is its emotion evoking abilities, which is why it's so subjective.

c) Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or why not?

I think Americans both do and don't value art in the 21st century. Artistic expression has boomed and has infiltrated all sorts of aspects of life, however censorship has also persisted. Although not as lethally enforced as in the past, some people still find it prudent to hide or remove any content they find objectionable.

a) What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word ART?

When I think of art I think of creativity. To me, art is all about coming up with ideas on how to either make a performance better, or even drawing or painting. Art is about expressing yourself and the more you portray yourself in your art, the better it will be.

b) What makes something ART or artistic?

What makes something art is the passion. If someone is really passionate about what they do, it makes it all more believable, especially in the theatre aspect of things.

c) Do we Americans living in the 21st century VALUE Art in our society? Why or why not?

I think that in some areas of the world art is more appreciated than in other. As an example, in New York City or in Hollywood art is everywhere you look. But in other areas of the world art is not appreciated as much as it is in others.
